Dar es Salaam, February 4, 2025 – On the occasion of the Mission 300 - Africa Energy Summit, in Dar es Salaam, President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron announced AFD Group's commitment on behalf of France to mobilize €1 billion to accelerate access to energy in Africa by 2030. AFD's Chief Executive Officer, Rémy Rioux, who attended the summit, reiterated the Group's commitment to fair energy transitions. He also signed an agreement to finance a project to provide access to healthcare and combat female cancers in Tanzania and Kenya.
1 billion euros to power sub-Saharan Africa
Launched by the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank Group, the Mission 300 program aims to connect 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030. Speaking during a panel discussion at the African Energy Summit, and alongside representatives of public development banks, Rémy Rioux reiterated AFD Group's full commitment to Mission 300, and to increasing AFD operations dedicated to the electrification of the African continent by more than 50%. He also invited participants to continue discussions on accelerating access to electricity at the Finance in Common Summit this February.
AFD Group's contribution to the Tanzanian government's priorities
On the sidelines of the Summit, Rémy Rioux met with Dr. Doto Mashaka Biteko, Tanzania’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, and Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, Tanzania’s Minister of Finance. The audience provided an opportunity to discuss AFD Group's contribution to the Tanzanian government's priorities over the past fifteen years. On this occasion, they mentioned the launch of a partnership between the Ministry of Energy and the International Energy Agency (IEA), with the support of AFD, to draw up an energy transition plan, to define Tanzania's carbon trajectory at COP 30 in Belém. The CEO, alongside the French Ambassador to Tanzania, Anne Sophie Avé, also held discussions with Tanzania's main public and private financial institutions, alongside the French Ambassador, to promote financial inclusion, environmental transition and mutual complementarity between these players, within the framework of the Finance in Common movement (FiCS).
Innovative project to combat female cancers
During his visit to Dar es Salaam, Rémy Rioux also signed a new project to combat women's cancer in East Africa (EA-CCP). This grant project is being implemented by the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) in Kenya and Tanzania, and is financed by the AFD to the tune of 4.2 million euros, 3 million euros from the Gates Foundation and 2 million euros from the Aga Khan Foundation. Thanks to the expertise of the Institut Curie, 7.4 million people will benefit from cancer awareness campaigns, and 400,000 women will be screened for breast and cervical cancer. The project also aims to vaccinate 800,000 girls against HPV in Tanzania and 2.4 million girls in Kenya over the course of the program.
