Supporting the Lebanese Public Education System

In the context of the multifaceted crisis that the country is experiencing and the weakening of the public education sector, the project acts on four main components for the retention support and learning support of the most vulnerable students, Lebanese and Syrians: improving the school environment, enhancing the learning and teaching quality, strengthening relations in and around the school community as well as addressing the well-being of children at school.

This project also ensures the rehabilitation of 7 schools affected by the Beirut explosion which caused damages to over 240 schools.

This project is implemented by a consortium of NGOs led by the Norwegian Refugee Council and including Amel Association International, Ana Aqra and International Alert. It aims to achieve the following five objectives :

• Support student retention through the implementation of immediate measures to support schooling. This includes actions to raise awareness among families, close follow up of students, distribution of learning kits, school feeding and providing transportation for students.
• Improve the quality of school learning environment through the implementation of light rehabilitation activities and the procurement of school equipment.
• Improve the well-being of children by setting up psychosocial support activities, sports and artistic activities, and preventing school violence.
• Improve school-family relations and host-refugee communities’ relations. The project will put in place targeted measures to support schooling in order to alleviate the impact of unequal access and promote social cohesion.
• Support the rehabilitation of schools affected by the Beirut Port explosions and provide complementary school rehabilitation works to ensure schools directly affected are safe learning environments.

• The school retention program will be implemented in 20 public schools identified by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE), in different Lebanese localities: Akkar, Baalbeck, Hermel, West-Bekaa, Zahle, Baabda, Minieh-Denieh, Tripoli and Beirut.
• 12 000 student will benefit from the retention support programme and 2 400 under school improvement.
• 600 teachers and 3 875 parents/caregivers will benefit from the programme.
• The school rehabilitation works, following the explosion, will impact 5 000 students, by contributing to the restoration of 7 schools.
