Fundo de Investimento e Património do Abastecimento de Água (FIPAG)
This project is part of the "Maputo Water Supply Project" (MWSP) expansion, aimed at securing production by upgrading and expanding the water network and reduce losses.
Context
Access to drinking water is a key issue in Mozambique and Maputo. In the capital city, the coverage rate was estimated at 40%, while the government aims to reach over 70% coverage by 2015 (Millenium Goals). Fundo de Investimento Património do Abastecimento de Água (FIAPG), a public fund endowed by the Mozambican state and responsible for water services in Maputo, and the Aeroportos de Moçambique (ADM), a public company to which management was delegated by leasing, are partners to this initiative.
Description
The project supports FIPAG with:
- Upgrading the only existing pumping and treatment plant in Umbeluzi;
- Renovating, reinforcing and expanding the existing networks (better coverage and loss limitation);
- Rehabilitating existing supply centres, including ground tanks, pumping stations and water towers.
Impacts
- Increase of drinking water coverage to reach 620,000 additional people;
- Increase in the number of users and, correspondingly, of the turnover of the supply company: Águas da Região de Maputo (AdeM);
- Global improvement of the sector’s finances for the benefit of the operator, FIPAG and, ultimately, to users, through maintaining tariffs at the lowest level possible.
