Nature-related risks in South Africa

Numerous studies analyzing Nature Related Risks (NRRs) have recently been published. They all highlight that biodiversity loss can have significant destabilizing dynamics for the financial system, via either the collapse of ecosystems and the services they provide to the economy, or via changes in behavior, technology or regulation implemented in the context of an ecological transition.

How can we better take into account the macro-financial context for NRRs analysis in emerging countries where it plays a key role in the resilience of individual companies or institutions?

Compared to the climate issue, how can we better take into account the territorial aspect of nature-related risks and conduct a spatially explicit assessment?

In South Africa, the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) has developed and refined its practices for mainstreaming biodiversity over the last 15 years. Building on the momentum of previous collaborations, some members of the SANBI and AFD teams have come together during 2022 to undertake exploratory work to further research on Nature Related Risks and Opportunities.
