Dramatic advances in artificial intelligence (AI) offer unprecedented opportunities in fields ranging from medicine and education to the monitoring and protection of biodiversity. 

AI also has the potential to upend the way societies function, however, and governments are racing to introduce regulations for a fast-evolving technology. Which is why, in the approach to European Data Protection Day, AFD Group is organizing the conference "Artificial intelligence, regulation and human rights."

Along with the benefits AI brings society, it also poses potential threats, not least to human rights. Concerns have been raised over the protection of personal data and privacy and the freedom of opinion. AI is also capable of taking the manipulation of opinion in democratic processes to a whole new level, and fueling biases and discrimination. 

But the powerful technology also possesses potential solutions. 

AFD Group is working on a strategic framework for artificial intelligence, and is striving to promote the accessibility of these technologies in developing countries in a regulated and controlled manner. 

With an eye to different approaches to regulation in Europe and Africa, the conference will tackle questions of transparency, AI literacy, the reuse of data, the digital commons, and other issues.
