The “Migrants, Markets and Mayors: Rising above the Employment Challenge in Africa's Secondary Cities” report stands out for its innovative approach, as until now, research on migration and urban development in Africa has primarily focused on larger cities and rural-to-urban migration. However, 97 percent of Africa’s urban centers have fewer than 300,000 inhabitants, and a sizable share of urban migrants come from other urban areas.
On the occasion of the publication of the French version of joint report by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the World Bank Group, join a conversation in which researchers and practitioners examine the consequences of migration on urban labor markets in Africa's secondary cities, as well as the crucial role of mayors in this issue.
On March 26th, 2024, the United Nations' International Organization for Migration (IOM) published its new report on migration in Africa. According to this report, the main factors behind the displacement and movement of people in sub-Saharan Africa in 2022 remained conflict and violence, exacerbated by increasing climatic shocks and risks. Most of this migration takes place within the African continent, rather than across its borders. In order to understand this internal phenomenon, a dynamic perspective, integrating migration flows along the urban hierarchy, as well as migrants between cities, is required to better understand and leverage migration for urban development.
Hence, this “Migrants, Markets and Mayors: Rising above the Employment Challenge in Africa's Secondary Cities” report draws on demographic data, research papers, key informant interviews and empirical research to better understand how migrants from Africa's secondary cities fare in urban labor markets, how they affect overall urban productivity, and how mayors can harness the potential of migrants to the benefit of all. It explores these issues across countries and four urban contexts: Jijiga in Ethiopia, Jinja in Uganda, and Jendouba and Kairouan in Tunisia.
On the occasion of the publication of the French version of this report jointly published by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the World Bank Group, join a conversation in which researchers and practitioners discuss the consequences of migration on urban labor markets in Africa's secondary cities, as well as the crucial role of mayors in this issue.
