AFD “Macrodev” Publication: Africa’s Financing Needs in Question

With the new semi-annual publication MacroDev Panorama, the Éditions Agence Française de Développement (AFD) aim to shed light on the economic trajectories of the countries where the Group operates.

These analyses are based on monitoring over a long period and are rooted in a detailed knowledge of local contexts. Cyclical developments, which are often highlighted in the news, are systematically examined in the light of long-term trends in these economies.

Special emphasis is placed on developing countries for which macroeconomic analyses are rare or occasional, in order to complement existing publications on the latest global economic developments, which tend to concentrate on advanced economies and large emerging countries.

This first issue of MacroDev Panorama thus focuses largely on African economies, in a context of rapid transformation across the continent, at a time when the impact of the Covid-19 crisis threatens to undermine the progress that has been made over the last decade.

A thematic contribution on external balances at the continental level looks at the differentiated vulnerabilities of African economies in terms of external financing and access to liquidity during the crisis, as well as at their resilience factors.

The issue also includes four analyses of African countries: Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Madagascar and Zambia. They are accompanied by country focuses on Ecuador, Georgia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan, and by a regional analysis of the impact of the crisis on Overseas France.
